Riki asked:
I have three cats that are about 18 months old. Much as I’d like to put up an artificial tree this year I’m very leery about it because I’m sure they will be constantly playing with it and the ornaments. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to stop that?

nothing you can do! My cat is 15 years old and she still plays with the baubles!
I’ve been a cat owner all my life and have yet to find a way to keep the buggers away from the tree. I’m not sure it’s possible. They’re new and big and climbable and have toys draped all over them. As far as kitty is concerned, it’s theirs. Good luck and Merry Christmas! NO TINSEL!!!
i’ve just got a mischievous cat and am worried about this too!
i’m going to make sure the door to the room is shut when no-ones in or i’m upstairs, and if she tries anything when i’m in the room i’m going to clap loudly as she already recognises this as me telling her off.
good luck!
tie the **** the the ceiling fan and wait till christmas is over or try putting something the cat does not like in the tree
Sprinkle cayenne pepper all around the tree
We bought a christmas singing toy dog and put him under the christmas tree. Cats hated him so it worked just let him sing jingle bells everytime they went near it and they ran a mile. Also for extra safety weight the bottom of your xmas tree down or remove any breakables from around ur tree as you may end up having a very expensive xmas. Hope it works out for u and that u have a fab xmas and the playful kittys too.
It’s their Christmas as well you know and trees are irresistable to cats. Relax and let them have fun. Happy Christmas.
i’ve been trying to figure out how to keep mine from knocking the whole yule tree down
good luck
When we first put up our tree last year the cat was all over it. She loved to chew on the bottom branches. Lucky for us she never tried to climb it. But what we did before any presents were put under the tree is have a spray bottle with water in it. We sprayed her when she would try to bite at the branches. It work pretty well. Although I will admit I have a smart mischievous cat who knows not to do it when we are in the room so for all we know she still does it when we are not at home. Maybe it will work for one of yall.
We bought a tattle tale from petsmart for $9.99. You hang it in the tree and if the cats mess with the tree and move it the tattle tale emits a high pitched sound the scares the cats away. It only took 2 times and all 14 of cats left the tree alone.

If your kitties start to play with the tree while you are around to catch them. Use a ****** bottle or gun to detour them from messing with the tree. If you catch them often enough, eventually they may stay away.
It has worked for me.
I USE A WATER BOTTLE WHEN I AM HOME AND WHEN IM OUT I PUT THEM IN ANOTHER ROOM
This is one of the joys of cat ownership! That’s what they do at Christmas! They love trees and shiny, dangly things. On the lower branches, fasten the ornaments really good onto the branches, and make sure not to put your expensive ones on the lower branches. Merry Christmas!
Why stop them at all, just put some safe decorations on the tree, no glass and no tinsel and sit back and enjoy their antics, you’re missing out on a lot of fun and laughs if you don’t let them play. Relax and get your camera ready.
hello riki .can i ask another question.how can i share picture with my friends on yahoo Messenger. thank you so mush for send me that sit

I am not sure you can 100 percent, but what I do to narrow down the damage is to use craft safety pins (you can get them at Hobby Lobby or Michael’s) that have no loop at the bend of the pin and PIN the ornaments to the branches of the tree. Takes longer to decorate the tree, but that will keep the cats from pulling them off. I use all blown glass ornaments on my tree, and no icicles, and by the end of the season, usually only one bites the dust. Ornament, not cat.
I only have a four foot tree since I don’t have any kids, and it is just me and the cats in the house. I put it on tup of my entertainment center and use a bungee cord to strap it to the top so the cats cannot pull it over. Tree skirt covers the bungee cord nicely. I don’t let any ornaments dangle on the bottom branches either. That is really asking too much of the cats to ignore bottom dangles!
Furthermore, I spray the tree with a product called Boundary, which you can get at PetSmart, or other pet stores, and keep doing it throughout the holiday season.
If you have a large tree, (real or otherwise,) I suppose you could put a thin board on the floor first and bungee the base to the board, so if they try to climb, they won’t tip the tree over but other than the spray, I am not sure what you can do to keep them away.
I suppose the rest of the option would be, if you have a big enough house, would be to confine the cats to a floor, or group of rooms where they can’t get to the tree!
Good luck — I can tell you what I have been doing has worked for the last eight years.
All responses are good, some funny and amusing while others pretty practical; hope along with their suggestions, you would consider eyeballing info on the following link too:
All the best in your noble pursuit. A merry Christmas to all.
