How do I GROW bacteria in water?

how do I
Anil S asked:

So I’ve let a colony of bacteria grow in a petri dish (with agar of course).

I know HOW to transfer the bacteria in the water. What I do not know, however is HOW to grow the bacteria in the water. Does it need something to grow off of in the water? Or can it grow without the assistance of anything else present in the water?

put some organic material in the water, and wait.

    They’ll die in pure water.

If you want them to grow, you’ll have to make media, a solution of salts and nutrients that allow bacteria to grow.

Here’s the recipe for one of the most common type of liquid media.

when transferring bacteria via the liquid route you have to use 0.9% sterile saline instead of water. You should use the same media you grew your bacteria on without the agar. You can purchase pre-made liquid media.
