This is a great recipe for removing cat urine odor from carpet. Start by blotting up as much of the urine as possible with old rags or paper towels. Next mix 3 parts water with one part vinegar and saturate the spot.Dry thoroughly using the same method mentioned above. Once dry, sprinkle the area with Baking Soda. Next mix ¾ cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution with one tsp. dish detergent and sprinkle over the Baking Soda. Try this first on a small inconspicuous area of the carpet to make sure the hydrogen peroxide won’t discolor your carpet. Next, use your fingers or an old brush to work the Baking Soda in. I’ve used an old hairbrush with little bits of plastic over the tips with good results. Allow this to dry and vacuum it up. If there’s still a slight odor when done, lather, rinse and repeat.
Use lysol, and try to scrape some off… But you might need a steam carpet cleaner and then lysol or another powerful disinfectant, that would probably your best bet. Good Luck!
spray some of your deodrent
Baking soda worked brilliantly for me, but it actually absorbed some of the green dye in my carpet as well.
I use a Hoover Steam Vac.
First I do a couple of passes with hot water, this gets the bulk of the urine out but doesn’t go as deep as the urine since the urine has had more time to seep in. Then I do one pass with hydrogen peroxide, provided that it’s color safe for the carpet. A couple more passes with hot water to make sure all the peroxide is out. Then I pivot out the plastic thing at the front as if I was going to attach the upholstery attachment, this breaks the vacuum path. I load up with hot water and the pet odour remover with enzymes, doubling up on the recommended concentration and use the steam vac to soak the carpet with it (the vacuum path is broken so it won’t **** it back up). I wait maybe twenty minutes, maybe longer to let the enzymes try and seep in as deep as the urine did, then I put the plastic thing back where it should be and **** up the solution. I then let it dry, hoping that the enzyme will continue to break down the urine. When the carpet is dry as in really dry maybe the next day, I spread the baking soda carpet powder for removing pet odours onto the carpet, wait an hour or so and vacuum that up. I try not to use any liquid after applying the baking soda because I want it to be absorbent as long as possible which is why I wait for the carpet to be really dry before applying it.
I then set out the battery operated motion detecting cat scare devices called Ssscat to keep the cats away from the area.
An ozone generator like the Cat Mouse helps control odours as well.
Since the apartment has probably had the urine for quite some time, it’s probably seeped into the floor underneath the carpet so you may have to let the enzyme solution soak for a long time to get it in as deep as the urine went. Give the enzyme a few days to work it’s magic and repeat if necessary.
If you still have problems, you could get a dry vapour steam cleaner, those have boilers that heat the steam up to 285 F, you spray out the steam and throw down terry cloth towels to soak up the junk that the heat loosens up.
The dry vapour steam cleaners can cost from $500 to $2,000 so most of the products that say steam such as the Hoover Steam Vac doesn’t actually have steam, nor a heater.
With a real steam cleaner, you’ll need a lot of towels but you should be able to get them from a discount shop.
What I did was got a carpet shampooer and mixed this liquid called Cat-Off in it. It took the smell out so fast, didn’t leave any stains or spots, and it doesn’t smell that bad. I got it at my local vet.
At petsmart they have a pet urine/stain remover and its in a red and white bottle and works very well
give this a try, be sure to flush out well inbetween treatments.
All the best and good luck!
