Um, in Calforina it is illegal to smoke in apartments--the fact that no one can smoke goes without saying. Since it is your place, they should ask permission to smoke anyway. Tell them about the designated smoking area outside.

Show these friends the attractive outdoor area you have prepared for their smoking pleasure. Provide seating and place to dispose of *****. Most smokers are by now used to the idea of going outside to 'the **** hut' to light up. If you come home and the living room stinks, you can politely ask your guests if they have been smoking in the living room. If yes, ask them to step out to the **** hut in the future. If someone continues to ignore your wishes in this matter, consider withdrawing that someones guest privileges. It is up to guests to respect the hosts' house rules, not up to hosts to find funny/clever ways to teach guests manners.

Don't try to be funny/clever about it. Most smokers are perfectly reasonable when it comes to things like that. Just spell it out for them. Don't allow them to smoke inside while you're there, and tell them if you find out they've been smoking in the apartment while you're not there, they will not be permitted inside the apartment when you're not home.

You said yourself, it's your property.

You simply tell them that there is no smoking in the house. It's not unusual, and in fact is quite common. No need to be funny or clever. If they were allowed to smoke in your last home, you might meet with some resistance, but I have never heard of anyone's friends deliberately violating those wishes. If they do just because they are not supervised then you cannot trust those people in your home and should probably reevaluate your friendship (and stop giving out that kind of access).

What's with being cute? It's YOUR house. Just tell them... end of story. No smoking in the house. Put ashtrays out back or something for the smokers that you know and let them smoke out there but they should just know anyway, not to light up in a nonsmoker's house. I smoke. So does my husband. He smokes in his car. I don't because he's such a fanatic about his car and I respect that. This is the man I'm married to. Not someone I'm visiting but I still have enough respect and consideration for the fact that it's something that he pays for and spends a lot of time and money on, I can wait until I'm not in his car. I don't smoke in anyone's house or anyone's car who is a nonsmoker or anywhere near them. I have all the respect in the world for nonsmokers and so should your friends. You have to make sure they respect YOU when they come over to your house.

It is your place so just be clear about it. No if nor but. Hang a sign on the front door stating this.
# No smoking # simple but clear to the point. I smoke but never in other people's place.

OMG - JUST BE OPEN, BLUNT AND VERY SERIOUS ABOUT IT. DO NOT try to be clever, funny, or joke about it.

I am a smoker, have been for over 30 years. I do not even smoke in my OWN house, my OWN car, or when I am around ANYONE. I have friends that DO smoke n their homes, and I still won't do it. BUY or MAKE several SIGNS using very bright colors, saying SORRY, NO SMOKING and this means YOU. Then, make SURE EVERYONE knows the rule AND your room mates help enforce it.

FYI - from my YEARS of sharing space with other people, it is NEVER EVER a good or smart idea to let ANYONE come in to your home when nobody that lives there can supervise. I know you all want to be friends, BUT, you have NO IDEA of how many hundreds of dollars worth of irreplaceable and valuable things I have had walk out the door, and NOBODY ever admitted to taking it. That RUINED more than one of my friendships. WORD OF CAUTION - do NOT trust ANYONE in your house unsupervised - it is NOT worth it.
