u have to specify what you mean by blending images together,
to have two images together , like 2 people from different backgrounds on one
or
having them appear at the same time but transparent?
…because no one can answer this much of an open question
as for the layer mask, it may be a fancy name but its just basically deleting part of an image thats on a layer, but instead , when its a mask , u can delete by selecting the brush with the black color to delete, but if you made any mistakes you can unerase whatever you erased from the image with selecting the brush with the white color and the previously erased parts will appear again.
u can create layer masks by selecting the rectangular shape with a circle inside it that appears under the layers window
if you dont know what a layer is though, thats another question
