What is the difference between the words immigrant and emigrant?

ChevyGirl asked:

I know what an immigrant is but isn’t and emigrant basically the same thing?

Same thing different direction. (or different reference point.) You immigrate to the US. You emigrate from the PI.

They refer to opposite directions. You emigrate from a country and immigrate to another one.

Immigrant has come in and emigrant has gone out of the country

Immigrant is someone who comes to the country from another to settle.
Emigrant is someone who leave one country to settle another.

Example) I emigrated UK to immigrate to US. Therefore, I’m an emigrant of UK, but immigrant in US.
