I've always found white wine vinegar solves this problem, soak the underarms before washing with a biological powder. Do test coloured shirts before hand, I've only tried on white shirts where colour run wasn't a problem.

Soak them in bio powder overnight and add the old fashioned washing soda into the wash.
It is available from supermarkets and Wilkinson's for approximately 55p a bag. Much cheaper than Oxy or Vanish and basically, the same product.

You have two problems here.
Firstly the shirts which have crisped up under the armpits. Spray with liquid dettol (the clear one) this should break down any build up of bacteria, and soak the shirt for about a half hour before washing.
Secondly, buy liquid Vanish which is an in-wash product you add with your normal detergent. This should get rid of your problem, however, you do need to change your deodorant, if this is what it is doing to your clothes - what is it doing to your sweat glands ?
If any of the shirts still have the hard area after this, throw them out because you are still going to have a bacteria problem there and you will always have that sweaty whiff from them. Good luck.
