Rectangular greenhouses are usually aligned according to the direction where the sun rises though sometimes you will have too much sun so local conditions must decide.
You want to get plenty of light into your greenhouse but plants can be damaged by too much strong sunshine so you should get local advice on greenhouse positioning in your area. Glass is not always used for greenhouses and there are some very effective alternatives that are more resistent to wind damage and breaking glass panels.
The traditional way to build a greenhouse can mean it lasts for decades while plastic greenhouses may only last a few years but they are a great alternative to get started with greenhouse gardening.
